Your Antalya guide

Welcome to Antalya! Known as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean," this marvelous Turkish city is a true paradise for all visitors, regardless of their physical abilities. With a population of around 2.5 million inhabitants according to the latest estimates, Antalya stands out for its natural beauty as well as its rich history and culture.

Founded by King Attalus II of Pergamon in the 2nd century BCE, Antalya has been an important meeting point for diverse cultures throughout the centuries. Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans have all left their mark on the city, which is reflected in the wide variety of historical architecture you can see today.

The old town of Antalya, known as Kaleiçi, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Its narrow and winding cobblestone streets, filled with pastel-colored houses dating back to the Ottoman Empire, transport visitors to a bygone era. Although some parts of Kaleiçi can be a bit challenging if you are in a wheelchair due to the cobblestones, many historical sites and restaurants are accessible for people with reduced mobility.

One of the most accessible places is the impressive Roman harbor, which has been in use since the 2nd century BCE. It is now a port for yachts and tourist boats, and it can be accessed through gentle ramps. Here, you can enjoy incredible views of the Mediterranean and admire traditional Turkish boats called gulets.

The Antalya Museum, awarded for its accessibility, is another site you shouldn't miss. With an impressive collection of artifacts spanning from prehistory to the Ottoman era, this museum offers a deep insight into the region's rich history. It features wide ramps and elevators, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy its content.

Beyond the old town, the modern city of Antalya is vibrant and energetic. The wide and flat boulevards are ideal for wheelchair users. Konyaaltı, one of the main tourist areas, is famous for its beautiful pebble beach and lively promenade, filled with restaurants, cafes, and shops. This promenade has been designed with accessibility in mind, with ramps and paved pathways that allow wheelchair users to enjoy the Turkish sun and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

For those seeking more adventure, Antalya offers a range of accessible excursions. Köprülü Canyon National Park is one of them. Although famous for rafting, it also offers opportunities for accessible hiking and picnicking in its breathtaking natural landscapes.

Düden Waterfall Gardens, located within the city, are an oasis of tranquility. The 20-meter-high waterfalls cascade into the Mediterranean Sea, creating a spectacular view. The park surrounding the waterfalls has well-maintained and paved trails, making it easily accessible. The upper area of the waterfalls is easily accessible, although it's worth noting that accessing the cave behind the waterfalls requires descending some stairs.

If you're looking for a unique shopping experience, Antalya's bazaar is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the city, this bustling market is where you can find everything from spices and jewelry to handmade carpets and souvenirs. Although it can be a bit hectic, many areas of the bazaar are wheelchair accessible. We recommend bringing someone with you to help navigate through the crowds.

In addition to its rich history and beautiful beaches, Antalya is famous for its food. With a blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors, the food in Antalya is an unforgettable culinary experience. Many restaurants in the city are accessible, with flat entrances and enough interior space to maneuver a wheelchair.

One dish you must try is the pide, sometimes called "Turkish pizza," a delicious combination of meat, vegetables, and cheese on a crispy bread base. We also suggest trying lamb kebabs, sweet and sticky baklava, and refreshing apple tea.

It is important to mention that while Antalya has made great efforts to improve accessibility, there are still areas where difficulties may be encountered. Some older streets in the old town are narrow and paved, and not all historical sites are fully accessible. We recommend planning your route in advance and considering the possibility of hiring a local guide who knows the most accessible areas of the city.

Despite these challenges, Antalya remains an incredibly rewarding destination for wheelchair travelers. With its rich history, beautiful beaches, delicious food, and friendly people, this Turkish gem welcomes you with open arms.

So, are you ready to explore Antalya? With its blend of the old and the new, its mix of natural beauty and man-made wonders, Antalya is a place that captivates the hearts of all who visit. Come and discover why this wonderful city is a true treasure of the Mediterranean.

Adapted beaches

Antalya, the "Turkish Riviera," is famous for its golden sandy beaches that line the blue waters of the Mediterranean. But what makes these beaches even more special? It's their commitment to inclusion and accessibility, with several beaches offering excellent facilities for wheelchair users. On this tour, we'll take you through some of Antalya's most accessible beaches.

We begin our journey at Konyaaltı, one of Antalya's most popular beaches. This wide strip of gravel and sand stretches for 7 kilometers from the west of the city center to the Beydağları mountains. The beach is very accessible, with ramps and walkways that make it easy to access the sand and the sea. Additionally, they offer amphibious wheelchairs that allow visitors to enter the water. Facilities at the beach include accessible toilets, showers, and restaurants with ramps. Konyaaltı Beach is easily accessible by public transportation from the center of Antalya. Local buses have access ramps and designated spaces for wheelchairs.

We continue our tour at Lara Beach, located to the east of Antalya. This sandy beach is known for its luxurious resorts and family-friendly atmosphere. Lara Beach is also accessible, with wooden walkways leading to the water's edge and accessible toilets. Beach wheelchairs are available for use, and trained staff are on hand to assist. Although Lara Beach is a bit further from the city center, it is accessible by public transportation. Buses to Lara Beach are wheelchair accessible and have space to accommodate wheelchairs.

Our next destination is Belek Beach, a 16-kilometer-long sandy beach in the town of Belek, about 30 kilometers east of Antalya. Belek is known for its luxurious resorts, many of which offer direct beach access and excellent facilities for wheelchair users, including amphibious wheelchairs. The town of Belek is also accessible by public transportation from Antalya.

Next, we visit Side Beach, located in the ancient city of Side, about 60 kilometers east of Antalya. This picturesque beach stretches for two kilometers and is flanked by the ruins of an ancient Roman theater and a Temple of Apollo. Side Beach offers ramps and walkways, as well as accessible toilets. However, please note that the sand here may be a bit coarser, which can make mobility more challenging. Side is accessible by public transportation from Antalya, but it can be a long journey, so plan your day accordingly.

Finally, we head south to Patara Beach, located in the ancient city of Patara. This sandy beach, one of the longest in Turkey, is known for its natural beauty and nearby archaeological site. Patara Beach is also known for its commitment to accessibility. There are wooden walkways leading to the beach and the sea, and amphibious wheelchairs are available. Efforts are also being made to make the nearby archaeological site accessible to all. Patara is about a 3-hour drive from Antalya, but it can also be reached by public transportation.

All of these destinations offer a variety of amenities, from restaurants and cafes to umbrella and sunbed rentals, many of which are wheelchair accessible. Some beaches also offer water activities such as snorkeling and diving, and in some cases, these activities may also be accessible for people with reduced mobility.

It's worth mentioning that public transportation in Turkey has improved in terms of accessibility in recent years. Many buses in Antalya are now equipped with ramps and spaces for wheelchairs. However, you may encounter some difficulties depending on the time of day and the bus occupancy level. Additionally, wheelchair-accessible taxis are becoming more common in Antalya.

Remember that accessibility can vary depending on daily conditions and individual needs. Be sure to do your research and plan your day in advance. You may want to consider renting a beach wheelchair or scooter to facilitate mobility on the sand. Additionally, don't hesitate to ask for help if needed. Turks are known for their hospitality and will be happy to assist.

The Antalya region offers a fantastic mix of sun, sand, sea, and culture for all visitors, regardless of their physical abilities. Whether you prefer relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea, savoring delicious Turkish dishes, or exploring ancient archaeological sites, there's something for you in Antalya. Neighborhoods / Areas

Kaleiçi Neighborhood

Welcome to a wheelchair-accessible stroll through Kaleiçi, the historic heart of Antalya. Here, you'll experience the wonderful ambiance of cobblestone streets, ornate wooden balconies, colorful shops, and the vibrant history of various ancient civilizations.

Our journey begins at the monumental Hadrian's Gate, a white marble structure built to commemorate the visit of Roman Emperor Hadrian to the city in 130 AD. This impressive structure, consisting of three arches, features Latin inscriptions, intricately carved stone embellishments, as well as marble columns and Seljuk-era towers. The area around Hadrian's Gate has relatively flat ground, making it wheelchair accessible.

Once we pass through Hadrian's Gate, we enter the ancient Roman city of Antalya, known as Attaleia. This area, with its narrow cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses, transports us to a bygone era. While some of these streets may pose challenges due to the cobblestones, they are navigable with patience and caution.

One of the most charming aspects of Kaleiçi is the traditional Ottoman houses lining the streets. These houses, with their characteristic wooden windows and ornate balconies, offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Many of these houses have been converted into craft shops, cafes, and boutique hotels, and many of them are wheelchair accessible.

We continue our tour to the ancient Roman Harbor, which is now a marina for yachts and tour boats. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the views of the Mediterranean. The cafes and restaurants around the harbor are mostly accessible, and you can sit back and enjoy a cup of Turkish tea or a delicious kebab while taking in the sea views.

Our next destination is the Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque, a beautiful Ottoman mosque located in the heart of Kaleiçi. While the entrance to the mosque may require assistance due to a small step, the interior is spacious and accessible. Here, you can admire the beautiful İznik tiles and the impressive mosque dome.

Next, we head to Hıdırlık Tower, a Roman tower that has served as a lighthouse and fortress. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Mediterranean. The tower itself is not accessible, but the views from the base are equally stunning.

Finally, our tour concludes at Mermerli Beach, a small beach located right next to Kaleiçi. Although the beach itself may not be accessible due to steps, there is a terrace overlooking the beach that is fully wheelchair accessible. Here, you can enjoy the sea breeze and the views of the Mediterranean as you reflect on the wonders you've explored.

During our tour, you'll come across various restaurants and cafes. Many of them are located in old Ottoman houses and offer a mix of Turkish and Mediterranean dishes. Don't miss the opportunity to try gozleme, a type of Turkish crepe filled with cheese, spinach, or potatoes. It's also worth trying the döner kebab, one of Turkey's most popular fast foods. Many of these establishments are wheelchair accessible, although you may need assistance to navigate a small step at the entrance.

In addition to its rich history and vibrant culinary scene, Kaleiçi is also a paradise for shoppers. The streets are filled with shops selling all kinds of goods, from Turkish ceramics and carpets to jewelry and clothing. While the streets may be a bit narrow and crowded, many of the shops are accessible, and the staff is usually willing to assist.

Despite some challenges, such as cobblestone streets and occasionally narrow sidewalks, Kaleiçi is surprisingly accessible for wheelchair users. Many of the major attractions, restaurants, and shops are accessible, and most streets have ramps or are flat enough to be navigated in a wheelchair.

In conclusion, a wheelchair-accessible stroll through Kaleiçi is a fascinating and rewarding experience. While there may be challenges, the rich history, charming architecture, bustling streets, and breathtaking sea views make it worthwhile. With a little patience and perseverance, it is possible to explore and appreciate this historic gem of Antalya.

Remember that each experience is unique and depends largely on individual abilities and conditions on the day. It's always a good idea to plan your route in advance, carry water and sunscreen, and don't be afraid to ask for help if needed. The locals in Antalya are known for their hospitality and will be more than willing to assist.

So, go ahead and explore Kaleiçi and immerse yourself in its charm and unique character. We promise you won't regret the experience.
