Wellell Transformer Lite (Apex): In-depth review of the folding travel mobility scooter
Introduction: purpose of the test
The Wellell Transformer Lite is a folding mobility scooter that is an ideal companion for travel, city outings and everyday journeys. At Motion4rent, we carried out a thorough test to assess its performance in real-life conditions: how well does it cope with urban environments, how easy is it to transport, and what type of user is it suitable for? This review aims to provide a clear, useful and honest assessment of this model, covering portability, range, comfort and performance on more demanding surfaces. In the following sections, you will find technical specifications, user impressions and genuine customer feedback that add further insight to the analysis.
Wellell (Apex): 30 years of professionalism and quality
Behind the Transformer Lite is Wellell Inc., formerly known as Apex Medical. Founded in 1990, the company has supplied high-quality, innovative medical equipment for more than 30 years. In 2022, Apex became Wellell in order to emphasise its commitment to wellbeing, innovation and patient care worldwide. Wellell has its own manufacturing facility and is present in more than 60 countries through dedicated distribution and after-sales service networks. The quality of its products, from clinical mattresses to mobility scooters, reflects its reputation for excellence, safety and dependable customer support.
Easy folding and suitcase-style transport
One of the main features of the Transformer Lite is its clever manual folding mechanism. Simply tilt the scooter slightly and pull the lever located beneath the seat. Within seconds, the frame folds upright and stands independently, without the need to lift it or bend down. When folded, with a depth of just 42 cm, it can be rolled like a wheeled suitcase thanks to its four wheels. This means that you do not have to carry it: simply roll it to the car, lift or storage area.
Users have confirmed its practicality. One commented: “It is very easy to fold and transport. It fits perfectly in the boot of my car, and I do not need any help to handle it.” Weighing only approximately 20 kg in total, most people can move it independently. There is no need to dismantle or lift it: fold it, lock it and roll it.
Dimensions, weight and portability
The word “Lite” in its name is certainly justified. Weighing just 20.5 kg including the battery, or approximately 19 kg without it, the scooter is considerably lighter than traditional models. When folded, it measures 42 × 47 × 72 cm and requires very little storage space.
When unfolded, it remains compact: it is 97 cm long and 47 cm wide, with an adjustable handlebar height of between 83 and 97 cm. Its narrow 47 cm width allows it to pass through standard doorways and fit into small lifts, making it highly manoeuvrable in confined spaces.
Manufactured from lightweight aluminium, the Transformer Lite is ideal for active people who wish to travel by car, public transport or aeroplane. When folded, it is approximately the size of a medium suitcase and can be placed relatively easily in a car boot or luggage compartment.
Seat comfort and accessibility
Despite its compact dimensions, the Transformer Lite offers a comfortable ride. It has a padded seat measuring approximately 33 × 38.5 cm, adjustable armrests and a seat height of 55 cm, making transfers easier. Its ergonomic design is suitable for users with mild to moderate mobility limitations who are able to transfer onto the seat with minimal assistance.
A particularly notable feature is its adjustable rear suspension, which makes travelling over cobbles and uneven surfaces more comfortable. One user stated: “The rear suspension is excellent. I can travel over cobbles without discomfort.” Together with solid 7-inch tyres, magnesium alloy wheels and a padded seat, it offers a stable and pleasant ride in urban environments.
The delta-shaped handlebar is adjustable in both height and angle and has been ergonomically designed for users of different heights. The controls are intuitive: thumb-operated accelerator, automatic electromagnetic brake and a simple control panel displaying battery level, speed, horn and quick fault checks. The scooter is easy to use, even for first-time users.
Battery life and real-world range
The manufacturer states a range of up to 15 km, thanks to the 24 V 10 Ah lithium battery. In our tests, we achieved approximately 14 to 15 km on level ground with a user weighing 75 kg. Heavier users or steeper inclines reduce the range, for example to approximately 8 to 10 km with a user weighing more than 100 kg. The terrain, temperature and frequency of stopping and starting also affect the range.
The battery recharges in 5 to 6 hours and is removable, with its own charging port. This is convenient if you leave the scooter in the car and take only the battery indoors. It meets UN38.3 and IATA safety standards and includes a charge-level indicator.
Powered by a 150 W motor, the scooter reaches a maximum speed of 6 km/h, which is suitable for normal walking pace. It is not designed for full-day long-distance journeys, but it effectively meets most requirements for urban outings and tourism.
Performance on inclines and limitations
The recommended maximum gradient is 3°, approximately equivalent to a 5% incline, comparable to accessible ramps or gentle hills. The scooter manages small inclines well, but struggles on steeper slopes of approximately 8 to 10%, where the strain on the motor becomes evident.
The rear anti-tip wheels assist on short ramps, but prolonged climbing on steep inclines can cause the motor to overheat and drain the battery quickly. If you live in a hilly area, this may not be the most suitable model for everyday use. It performs particularly well in level urban environments such as airports, hotels and historic town centres.
When travelling downhill, the automatic brake helps ensure a safe descent, although caution is always recommended.
Turning circle and indoor manoeuvrability
The 140 cm turning circle allows tight turns in confined indoor spaces. The scooter can perform 180° turns on pavements of standard width and move easily through busy locations such as museums or supermarkets.
Its 47 cm width makes it easy to manoeuvre through corridors, small lifts and restaurants. Users describe it as being “like a large shopping trolley”: agile and predictable. Forward and reverse controls are operated from the handlebar, which also makes parking straightforward. For use at home, it fits into small bathrooms, kitchens and living areas without difficulty.
Suitability for air travel and cruises
Designed for travellers, the Transformer Lite complies with the relevant requirements for air travel and cruises. Its 10 Ah battery, approximately 260 Wh, is below the IATA limit of 300 Wh for air travel and can be removed for inspection or carried in the cabin as hand luggage. Most airlines accept the equipment provided that they are notified in advance.
It is also ideal for cruises. Ships are large and walking long distances can be exhausting. Its 47 cm width allows it to pass through standard cabin doors of approximately 58 cm, enabling it to be stored inside without necessarily requiring an accessible cabin. It folds upright and therefore occupies very little space.
During excursions ashore, it travels easily through narrow streets and busy tourist areas. Its speed of 6 km/h complies with onboard safety policies. It is an excellent travel companion for people with reduced mobility.

Conclusion: what to expect from the Transformer Lite
The Transformer Lite delivers what it promises: it is a lightweight, compact and folding mobility scooter, ideal for urban travel and everyday outings. It folds in seconds, remains upright and rolls like a suitcase, making it ideal for storage and transport.
Its comfort, suspension and handling are impressive. It is intuitive to use, even for elderly people or first-time users. Its build quality and reliability are among its strongest features.
It is not designed for steep hills or extremely long journeys, so it should not be regarded as an all-terrain vehicle. However, for everyday use, tourism and convenient mobility, it is an excellent solution.
As one user put it: “Worth every penny. I have not found this level of comfort and quality in other models.” If you match the intended user profile, the Transformer Lite is likely to exceed your expectations.
