Address: 1601 E NASA Parkway, Houston, TX 77058, USA
Inaugurated in 1992 as the official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, Space Center Houston stands as a living tribute to humanity’s ambition to reach the stars. More than just a museum, it is an immersive experience where past, present, and future space exploration intersect. From the Apollo-era artifacts that carried astronauts to the Moon to the modern marvels of Mars rovers and robotics, the center serves as both an educational hub and an inspiration to future generations of explorers.
As home to over 400 space-related artifacts—including the Apollo 17 Command Module, the Skylab trainer, and the colossal Saturn V rocket—Space Center Houston invites more than one million visitors each year to witness the stories of those who dared to look beyond Earth’s horizon. A full-scale shuttle replica, mounted atop a real Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft in the dramatic Independence Plaza, encapsulates the awe-inspiring scale of human ingenuity.
Accessibility & Arrival
Level access and arrival pathways
Designed with universal access in mind, Space Center Houston ensures that all visitors—regardless of physical ability—can enjoy a seamless arrival experience. The primary approach from the parking areas leads to wide, gently sloped walkways with non-slip surfaces and curb-free transitions. The entrance doors are fully automated, with spacious vestibules that open into the climate-controlled Grand Lobby.
Public transportation and drop-off
Although most visitors arrive by car, accessible public transportation is available via Houston METRO’s Bus Route 249, with stops along NASA Road 1. A short, paved and level sidewalk leads from the bus stop directly to the entrance. For guests using ride-share services or personal drop-off, a dedicated accessible loading zone is located near the front entrance, featuring ample space for van lifts and side-loading ramps.
Parking accommodations
Ample accessible parking is available in the main lot, clearly signposted and located adjacent to the visitor entry path. Each space is designed with extended width and marked access aisles to accommodate mobility aids and adapted vehicles.
Environment & On-Site Services
Exhibit access and interior navigation
All exhibit areas within Space Center Houston are fully wheelchair-accessible, including major highlights like Independence Plaza, the Starship Gallery, Mission Mars, and the International Space Station Gallery. Pathways are wide, level, and surfaced with low-resistance materials suitable for both manual and powered wheelchairs. In multi-story exhibits, such as those housed in Independence Plaza, elevators provide smooth access to all levels, including inside the mounted shuttle replica.
Tram tour accommodations
The popular NASA Tram Tour—departing regularly from the plaza—offers adapted boarding platforms and vehicles with wheelchair tie-downs. Tour staff are trained in safe boarding procedures and provide personal assistance as needed. The tour includes stops at historic Mission Control, astronaut training facilities, and the Saturn V rocket hangar, all of which are equipped with ramps or lifts where required.
Restrooms and hygiene facilities
Accessible restrooms are distributed throughout the facility and are designed with wide doorways, grab bars, high-contrast signage, and motion-activated faucets and flush controls. Family restrooms are also available, offering space for caregivers and additional privacy when needed.
