Votre Malmö Guide

Nordic innovation, living history, and a city designed for all

Located at the southern tip of Sweden and linked to Copenhagen by the iconic Öresund Bridge, Malmö is a vibrant coastal city where Scandinavian elegance meets cultural diversity and cutting-edge design. Compact yet cosmopolitan, historic yet forward-looking, Malmö has become a European leader in sustainable development, inclusive urban planning, and accessible tourism.

This is a city without barriers, where accessibility is not a feature—it’s a foundation.

From Baltic harbor to modern Europe

Founded in the 13th century as a Danish fishing settlement, Malmö quickly grew into a key trading port in the Baltic Sea. After centuries of shifting borders and power struggles, the city became part of Sweden in 1658.

During the Industrial Revolution, Malmö emerged as a powerhouse of shipbuilding and manufacturing. But its most remarkable transformation occurred in recent decades, as it reinvented itself into a smart, green, and inclusive city—representing the very best of modern Europe.

A city built for people: beautiful and barrier-free

Malmö is a model of inclusive design. Wide pedestrian paths, smooth ramps, tactile paving, accessible public restrooms, intuitive signage, and ample seating areas are all standard features.

New districts such as Hyllie and Västra Hamnen were planned from the ground up with accessibility in mind. These neighborhoods offer a harmonious blend of sustainable architecture, coastal views, and human-centered urban spaces where everyone can move freely and comfortably.

Landmarks and culture for everyone

Malmö’s historical and cultural sites are fully accessible:

  • The Malmö Castle (Malmöhus slott), a 16th-century fortress, houses museums of art, science, and history—all with elevators, adapted entrances, and inclusive exhibits.
  • The St. Peter’s Church, a Gothic masterpiece from the 14th century, is accessible for wheelchair users and offers serene, barrier-free spaces for reflection.
  • Lilla Torg, the city’s lively square, features accessible terraces, cafes, and flat, stone-paved streets ideal for easy navigation.
  • City museums offer sensory-friendly environments, multilingual signage, braille and tactile resources, and guided tours designed to meet a wide range of accessibility needs.
  • Nature in the heart of the city

Malmö is one of the greenest cities in Europe, with more than 30% of its land dedicated to parks, canals, and pedestrian zones:

  • Kungsparken and Slottsparken are central oases filled with sculptures, fountains, and accessible trails.
  • Pildammsparken, a former royal garden, offers tranquil lakes, flower gardens, and forest paths designed with all users in mind.
  • The city also hosts the Malmö Garden Show, with inclusive garden designs built for sensory stimulation and universal access.

Ribersborg Beach: accessibility by the sea

Known affectionately as “Ribban”, Malmö’s urban beach is a shining example of accessible nature. It features:

  • Wooden boardwalks,
  • Sea-access ramps,
  • Beach wheelchairs,
  • Accessible toilets and changing rooms,
  • Quiet zones for sensory-sensitive visitors.
  • The historic Kallbadhuset (open-air bathhouse), open year-round, has been modernized with lifts, accessible saunas, and trained staff who assist visitors of all abilities.

Culinary diversity with inclusive service

  • Malmö’s food scene is as diverse as its population. From traditional Swedish cuisine to Middle Eastern, vegan, halal, gluten-free, and lactose-free options—everyone can find something to enjoy.
  • Many restaurants and cafés are wheelchair accessible and offer menus in braille, pictogram-based formats, and dyslexia-friendly fonts.
  • Don’t miss:
  • A classic Swedish smörgås with pickled herring,
  • Local delicacies in Möllevången, a multicultural neighborhood known for its markets and street food,
  • A relaxed fika (Swedish coffee break) in one of Malmö’s accessible canal-side cafés.

Getting around: inclusive transport and mobility solutions

  • Malmö’s public transport system is efficient, modern, and fully adapted:
  • All city buses are low-floor and equipped with ramps,
  • Adapted taxis can be booked in advance,
  • Trains to and from Copenhagen have accessible platforms and onboard spaces.
  • Thanks to Motion4Rent, travelers can rent electric scooters, powered or manual wheelchairs, and even request personalized assistance or hotel delivery for mobility equipment during their stay.

Inclusive festivals and year-round events

  • Malmö is a cultural city with a strong focus on inclusion:
  • The Malmö Festival—Scandinavia’s largest free urban festival—features accessible stages, paths, and quiet zones.
  • The Malmö Arab Film Festival offers subtitled screenings, sign language interpretation, and accessible cinemas.
  • The Culture Night and Malmö Pride promote diversity and universal participation through fully inclusive programming.

A city without limits

In Malmö, accessibility is woven into the very fabric of city life.
Whether you’re strolling through medieval streets, relaxing in seaside parks, visiting world-class museums, or enjoying a live concert, the city welcomes you with open arms and open pathways.

Accessible Walking Tour of Malmö’s Historic Center, Sweden

Begin your journey at Malmö Central Station (Malmö C), the city’s main transportation hub and a modern, fully accessible facility. The station features step-free entrances, elevators, tactile paving, audible departure announcements, and accessible restrooms. Ticket counters and information desks are equipped with lowered service points and induction loops for hearing aid users. Trained staff are on-site to assist travelers with mobility or sensory needs.

Exit the station toward Centralplan, a wide and flat pedestrian area leading into the city center. Follow the clear, level pathways through Slussgatan, where smooth paving and signalized pedestrian crossings with tactile indicators ensure safe navigation. Benches with armrests are located along the route at regular intervals, offering convenient rest stops.

After about 5 minutes, you’ll reach Stortorget, Malmö’s historic main square. The plaza is completely flat with stone paving and step-free access to surrounding buildings, including Malmö City Hall (Rådhuset). While the historic interiors of some buildings may have limitations, accessible guided tours are available upon request, and staff are generally accommodating.

From here, continue along Södergatan, Malmö’s oldest pedestrian shopping street. This stretch is fully accessible, with wide pathways, no curbs, and step-free access to most shops and cafés. Many establishments are equipped with automatic doors, accessible toilets, and multilingual staff, especially during the tourist season.

Continue for another 6–8 minutes to reach Gustav Adolfs Torg, a spacious, flat square with accessible tram and bus connections, open cafés, and a centrally located accessible public restroom. The area is well-lit, and digital signage includes real-time transportation updates with both visual and audio displays.

Proceed down Skomakaregatan, a quieter street lined with boutiques and local eateries. The street maintains smooth, even surfaces and wide sidewalks with no steps or obstructions. Curb cuts and level entries are standard, and most cafés offer outdoor seating with tables at accessible height.

You will soon reach Lilla Torg, one of Malmö’s most picturesque squares, paved with flat cobblestones and surrounded by restored 17th-century buildings. While the cobblestones are historic, the area is navigable for most wheelchair users, and metal pathways have been added in key locations for easier rolling access. Most restaurants here have step-free entrances and staff trained in accessibility support.

From Lilla Torg, follow Kalendegatan toward St. Peter’s Church (Sankt Petri Kyrka). The path is flat and pedestrian-friendly. The church is one of Malmö’s oldest landmarks and features an accessible side entrance, with assistance available upon request. Inside, wide aisles, ramps, and accessible information displays allow for a rich, barrier-free experience. Audio guides and brochures in multiple languages are also provided.

To conclude your tour, head toward Kungsparken, Malmö’s oldest public park, located just 5–7 minutes from the church. The park features paved, level walking paths, accessible seating areas, and step-free viewpoints overlooking the canals and Malmö Castle (Malmöhus Slott). The castle museum itself offers partial accessibility, with an elevator and adapted restrooms available on site. Staff are on hand to assist as needed.

When you're ready to return, retrace your steps or take one of Malmö's low-floor, accessible buses or trams back to Malmö Central Station. All public transportation in Malmö is equipped with ramps, priority seating, and audio-visual stop announcements.

This 2- to 2.5-hour accessible walking tour through Malmö offers a harmonious blend of history, Scandinavian charm, and thoughtful design—ensuring that every step is as inclusive as it is inspiring.
